Installation Instructions
  • First time NUHEAT installers are required to contact the distributor during the planning stages.
  • Projects over 1,000 square feet of NUHEAT require a pre-installation conference between the designer, the installer and an authorized NUHEAT representative.

 A) HELPFUL TIPS
CONDUCT RESISTANCE AND INSULATION TESTS ON THE NUHEAT MATS(S) "BEFORE", "DURING" AND "AFTER" THE INSTALLATION PROCESS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE 25-YEAR WARRANTY. (See Section D)

All first time tile installers and electricians are required to contact us prior to the NUHEAT installation. At this time, a technical representative will briefly clarify critical installation procedures. Failure to follow this instruction will void the 25-year product warranty.

Please read the installation instructions completely and use NUHEAT with caution appropriate for an "electrical" and "heating" product.

Choose which controlling device(s) are required before installing NUHEAT; especially if installing the floor-warming control with G.F.C.I.

NUHEAT 25-year product warranty applies under ceramic tile, marble and natural stone installations only.

Allow at least 72 hours to 1 week for the mortar to cure, or according to manufacturer specifications, before activating NUHEAT.

It is mandatory to install a Class "A" G.F.C.I. or G.F.C.I. circuit breaker with each NUHEAT installation. NUHEAT must be installed on a dedicated circuit.

When planning your heating layout:
Measure the area(s) to be heated to determine which NUHEAT mats will fit your application.
Allow for obstructions (vanities, vents, exposed plumbing, etc.).

Remember that NUHEAT mats have no "up" or "down" side -- mats may be placed side by side maintaining at least 1" clearance between the heating wires.

There is little or no horizontal heat travel. Please consult us for design and sizing assistance. TOP

 B) UNPACKING AND HANDLING
I) BEFORE, DURING & AFTER INSTALLATION
Conduct resistance & insulation tests on the NUHEAT mat(s) at least three times during the installation process. See Section D for more information.

II) DURING INSTALLATION
Avoid the following activities that may damage NUHEAT:

  • unnecessary folding
  • walking on unit (protect with a cover like plywood)
  • stapling
  • nailing
  • dropping heavy objects on NUHEAT
Do Not Use grout scrapers or exacto knives to clean grout joints. Cleaning grout joints with sharp tools may damage the NUHEAT mat. Using these tools will void the NUHEAT warranty.

III) AFTER INSTALLATION
Allow your NUHEAT to "breathe" by avoiding "zero-clearance" furniture (i.e., solid oak cabinets, etc.).

Ensure that new occupants are aware that NUHEAT is installed in the home.

 C) GENERAL FLOOR PREPARATION
Ensure that the subfloor is free of debris and suitable for the floor covering before installing the NUHEAT mat(s).

 D) TESTING
DO NOT CONNECT MAT TO POWER DURING TESTING

I) INSULATION TEST
To ensure that the copper conductors are fully insulated:

  • acquire an ohmmeter or equivalent testing device
  • place one meter probe on the ground (outer metallic braid) and the other probe on the copper wire inside the white lead
  • confirm that the reading is 1 million ohms to infinity
  • repeat these steps to check the reading between the metallic braid and the copper wire inside the black lead

ll) RESISTANCE TEST
To ensure continuity in your heating mat:

  • acquire an ohmmeter or equivalent testing device
  • set the ohmmeter to the lowest setting
  • place one of the meter probes on the copper wire in the white lead and the other probe on the copper wire in the black lead
  • check to see that your reading in ohms closely matches the reading listed on the tag of the mat being tested.

NOTE: NUHEAT MUST BE TESTED BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER INSTALLATION TO VALIDATE THE WARRANTY.

 E) ELECTRICAL PREPARATION
Recommendations:
All wiring must follow specifications set out in Part 1 of the Canadian Electrical Code, the US National Electrical Code and local electrical inspection regulations. All NUHEAT units must be connected to the electrical service through a Class "A" Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.

INSTALLATION STEPS:

  • Connect the braided ground wire to the electrical box ground screw and attach to the G.F.C.I. with a standard ground copper conductor.
  • Attach the connecting wires to the outlet box using CSA Certified/UL Listed cable fittings. Tighten the diameter of the cable fittings to 1/5" (5mm) to secure the connection.
  • Make the electrical connection only after the flooring is complete. Whenever possible, the connecting cable should be laid in low traffic areas.

 F) NUHEAT INSTALLATION UNDER CERAMIC TILE, MARBLE AND NATURAL STONE
Recommendations:
To ensure a successful installation, NUHEAT recommends high quality, factory thin set mortars meeting the requirements of ANSI A118.4.

INSTALLATION STEPS
  • Mark the locations of the connecting cable and connection patch on the subfloor. Lay out the path of the 10' lead to the wall box around the perimeter of the NUHEAT mat(s). (Conduct TEST #1)
  • Using at least a 1/4" x 1/4" square notch trowel, lay a coat of fresh mortar over the area to be covered by NUHEAT.
  • Place NUHEAT onto the fresh mortar pressing firmly with grout float or lightweight roller. Create 100% contact between the heating unit, the mortar and the subfloor. Make sure that there are no air bubbles or curls and that the surface is flat to receive tile.
  • If leaving overnight, place a skim coat of mortar over the surface of the NUHEAT mat to cover it completely. Level the areas of the floor that are not covered by the NUHEAT mat(s). (Conduct TEST #2)
  • If installing a floor-warming control with G.F.C.I., ensure that the floor-sensing probe is installed at this point.
  • Set the tile on the NUHEAT. Tile must be installed according to requirements of ANSI A108.5. (Conduct TEST #3)
Clean the grout lines with a damp sponge/cloth as tile is being laid. The use of grout scrapers or exacto knives to clean grout joints will void the NUHEAT warranty.

NOTE:

Do Not Use grout scrapers or exacto knives to clean grout joints. Cleaning grout joints with sharp tools may damage the NUHEAT mat. Using these tools will VOID THE NUHEAT WARRANTY.

Before activating NUHEAT, allow the mortar and grout to cure 72 hours to 1 week or according to manufacturer guidelines.
